The Munster Football Final is the premier game in the Gaelic Football calendar in Munster. All six counties take part: Tipperary, Waterford, Limerick, Clare, Kerry and Cork. The teams play following an open draw and the two teams that win all their games progress to the final. The highlight of the year is a Kerry and Cork Final.
Kerry has won a total of 73 titles since the competition was started in 1887. Winning the Munster Title is an honour in itself and the winning team represents Munster in The All Ireland Series. Kerry won The Munster Final in 2010. The game was played in Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. At the final whistle the teams were level. They replay was played in Cork.
Over the years the biggest game in the Munster Championship is Cork V Kerry. The best scenario is when both teams meet in the final. Both Kerry and Cork rotate venues every other year. When there is a draw the replay is played in the other County. There is great rivalry between both teams and the fans throng to the games every year.
Cork fans love of Killarney as a venue for The Munster Final is well known. They love coming to the town and most turn up on a Friday night and stay until the game is over on Sunday. Cork is a big County and Fitzgerald stadium is close to most. They get value for money in the accommodation and food offered in the town.
Anyone visiting the town on a Munster Final weekend will see the hundreds of fans descending on the town. The Cork fans wear red and white, the Kerry fans Green and Gold. It is a pastime in itself to just sit and watch the fans and the lengths they go to dress in the County colours. Children love this aspect of the game and they usually dress to impress their peers in their county colours and in many cases get their faces painted and hair coloured for the occasion.
Once 12.00pm comes the children become anxious to go to the stadium. They do not wish to miss their team's entry on to the field. They love this part of the day. Everyone walks to the game from the town, a journey that takes less than five minutes normally. On a big match day it can take a little longer as fans stop to greet friends and discuss the outcome of the game. There is also the banter from the rival fans and this lends to the excitement.
Every year there is a Minor Final prior to the senior Final. It is a marvellous occasion if both teams are from Cork and Kerry in the minor final. It gives extra support to the young players who often are playing in their first Munster Final. This game wets the appetite for the game to come and the talented players are discussed in between the two games. Winning is not everything in this Minor game-however the winning side can relax-they have won a Munster title.
After the presentation to the Minor winning Captain the two senior teams appear on the pitch. The atmosphere is electric with both teams getting full vocal support from their fans. The teams parade behind the band, the national anthem is sung and the game begins.
