The Greek Island Of Santorini:Trekking on the Island of Santorini

By John Roney

One of nature's most generous displays of ethereal beauty and stuff that one can only conjure up in your wildest of fantasies: that is Santorini. The island is famous throughout the world for its breathtakingly beautiful sunsets and magnificent views of the caldera and the neighboring islands. With a rich history that goes as far back as the third millennium, evidenced by the archeological discoveries made in Akrotiri, human activity on the island ceased when an enormous volcano erupted around 1500 B.C, which engulfed the island beneath very thick layers of volcanic ash. It wasn't until the end of the 13th century B.C, that human activity resumed on Santorini.

Still, if you want to visit Kamari from Perissa (or vice versa) you can take a water taxi. Just be sure you find out what time the last taxi returns to the side where you're staying or you may end up stuck and forced to take a cab home. Perivolos beach lies just south of Perissa. The two beaches almost run together, but Perissa ends and Perivolos begins basically just where you'll find "Hotel Atlantis" and its beachfront cafe "So Bar, So Food." You'll notice the difference between the beaches because of the sort of "no man's land" in between. When making the decision to stay in a beach hotel in Santorini, there are a number of options a visitor is presented with. There are hotels that are right on the beach, or set a little bit back for more privacy. The hotels come in many different varieties, including youth hostels, guesthouses, villas, or posh resorts that offer every amenity known to the hospitality industry.

The massive amounts of history, cultural backgrounds and geological sites on Santorini mean that hiking here can be interesting to many different types of people. It also means that depending on where you choose to hike, the terrain can be difficult to pass through. You can choose to hike through paved areas, such as the biggest city on Santorini, Fira. Here, you can see many remains of the ancient cultures of Greece, as well as the beautiful architecture and atmosphere of this modern day vacation spot.

If you chose to make your Santorini Greece hiking trip in the more rural areas of the island, you can travel to see the 700 foot high volcanic sea cliffs on Armeni Bay, or see Imerovigli village which sits on 1000 foot high volcanic cliffs. You can even take a tour boat from Santorini in order to hike around the still active island volcano of Nea Kameni. This volcano erupted as recently as 1956, and it is still considered a very dangerous spot to live around.

Not to be outdone by the nightlife in towns, beach bars at Perivolos, Perissa and Kamari are pulling out all the stops when it comes to entertainment. Loud music and exotic spirits, beach volley and wild theme parties on full moon nights have turned the beaches into a total party place with fun, fun and more fun over the top until the sunset for Adventures On The Greek Island Of Santorini.
