Family Holidays to South Africa

By Chris Brown

Are you trying to think of creative ways to enhance the typical family holidays which you've been taking the clan on for years? The easiest way to achieve this is by ditching all the typical touristy resorts and destinations that everyone seems to go to. These include Greece, Spain and Central America. Africa is a huge continent with miles of potential. It's also perfect for family holidays as there's an abundance of family-orientated activities, including the magnificent safaris! This is a great idea if you want to spice up the standard holidays that you've been going on in recent years.

Kenya is a great place to visit, and it's teeming with animals all through the year. If you depart at this time of year you'll manage to escape the coldness of winter for a very hot and dry climate. It's easy to hire a 4x4 and drive around, but it's highly advised that you take the proper safety precautions get a proper tour. This will add a degree of insight into the tour too.

There is generally an armed guide on board too, should he be needed! One of the most popular game reserves is the Mount Kenya National Park which covers an area of 715 square metres and was awarded World Heritage status in 1997. Common game seen here are giraffes, elephants, buffalo and several species of antelope.

The rare Bongo antelope lives here and it is hoped that their numbers will increase in this protected area. Big cats seen here are the lion, cheetah and leopard. Packs of wild dogs are quite often seen which is encouraging as they are endangered and the African Wild Dog Conservancy are active in preserving their habitats and instigating breeding programmes in the wild.

Other pack animals commonly seen are the hyenas. They are powerful predators with the strongest jaw pressure of any animal. Both the spotted and the striped hyena can be seen at Mount Kenya. Late holiday deals here really are worth the money!
