The tourist influx to Shimla is always high, as the city is set amidst the Himalayan landscapes. A great way for them to make the most of their visit is to experience some of the heritage hotels which the place has to offer.
Hotel Peterhoff
This is a hotel that has a lengthy and interesting history behind it. First up, it has been home to seven very illustrious individuals, including Viceroys and Governor-Generals, during the days of the British colonial rule in India.
Post independence, the hotel served as a High Court, even witnessing the trial of Nathuram Godse. It later served as the residence of the governor of Himachal Pradesh. In 1981, it was damaged in a fire but was later renovated and turned into a luxury hotel.
The hotel has VIP rooms as well as deluxe and semi-deluxe rooms. Its structure and ambience give guests a feel of a different era. One can also get a view of the Dhauladhar mountain range from here.
Located 23 kilometres from Shimla airport and 3 kilometres from the railway station, Hotel Peterhoff is in the central part of Shimla. It also lies close to the State Museum and the Viceroy Regal Lodge which are places worth visiting. It is operated by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.
Chapslee Hotel
Another heritage hotel among the Shimla hotels is Chapslee. It was constructed way back in 1835 and once served as the summer home of Raja Charanjit Singh of Kapurthala. The Raja was supposedly a fantastic host and a food connoisseur.
Small in size, Chapslee has six suites, a conference room, a library, a tennis court, a bar and a card room among other things. It was made open to the public in the year 1976.
Among its best known features is the cuisine that it offers - many of the traditional dishes that used to be had by Indian royal families are served here. The best of Anglo-Indian cuisine is also available. A number of travel magazines have carried articles regarding the splendid cuisine at Chapslee.
The hotel is also known for its exquisite interiors and rare artefacts. Chapslee is situated near Lakkar Bazaar which is a famous marketplace in Shimla. Wooden toys and walking sticks made by Sikh carpenters hailing from Hoshiarpur can be found at the bazaar which also has a cinema hall and skating rink.
The well-known Auckland House Senior School lies next to Chapslee.
