Ways to Travel on the Cheap

By Brooke Schoenman

Do you want to travel more but find it hard because of lack of funds? This problem plagues many individuals, many of whom just don't know how easy it can be to travel on the cheap. Learn more about my thrifty travel ways in the following article.

Stay gone longer. Save money by traveling longer? Yes! When you take a trip, there are generally fixed costs one must deal with, like the cost of plane tickets and travel insurance. The plane tickets are a huge expense with international travel, and it turns out that you will spend more money per day for those plane tickets on a short getaway. So, a ticket that is $500 for a 5 day trip will cost you about $100 per day. However, a ticket of $500 for a 10 day trip will be $50 per day. Also, the ability to live in one location longer opens other opportunities, such as the ability to rent local apartments and find the local deals not normally visible to the quick tourist.

Travel to cheaper destinations. If you want to lounge on the beach, there are plenty of destinations around the world where beaches are beautiful and with a smaller price tag. Do some research and step out of your normal vacation destinations and you might find yourself saving money and falling in love with a new location.

Visit a destination after peak travel season. During the peak travel season, destinations are usually prepped and ready to go at making money off the tourists. Prices are high, people are everywhere, and the normal local lifestyle can become hidden. Going after the high season allows for travelers to see the real side of the culture while also receiving lower prices.

In addition to these ways to travel cheaply, you can save a buck here and there by searching for backpacker and traveler coupons and discounts, spending nights in hostels or budget hotels, and by eating out less often.
