Home Security While You Are Away On Vacation

By Billy Edward

* Inform your family and local law enforcement agency of your departure and return dates but do not otherwise publicize your travel or vacation plans. Leave contact numbers with suitable mission personnel.

* Arrange to have a friend or colleague get your newspapers, mail, or other deliveries daily.

* Secure your home. Close and lock all windows and doors. Don't forget about to lock garage or gate doors.

* Consider purchasing timers to switch on outside and inside lights automatically at numerous times throughout the night.

* Check outside lighting and change older light bulbs. You don't want a light burning out whilst you are at a distance.

* Ask a buddy or colleague to check out your residence periodically, ensuring your furnace or air conditioning is working and that timers and lights are working.

* The decision to set the automated alarm system might differ from region to region. Power outages and brownouts might trip alarm systems. Check with your security officer for advice on setting alarm systems when you are away for long periods of time.

* Unplug all unnecessary appliances like televisions, stereos, and personal computers.

* Mow your lawn just before leaving; make arrangements to have somebody mow it yet again if you'll be away for an extended time period. Also arrange for watering, if that's likely to be required.

* In the winter, make arrangements to have somebody shovel walkways if it snows. At least, have a neighbor walk from the street to your door several times.

* If possible, request a neighbor to park a car in your driveway (if you're taking yours).

* If you use a telephone answering machine, turn off the ringer on the phone. If you don't have an answering machine, unplug or switch off ringers on all telephones.

* Lock all jewelry, important papers, currency, and many other important portables in a safe place such as a safe deposit box or home safe.

* Make sure all personal and home insurance policies are up-to-date and that your coverage is enough.

Preparing your home before you head out on vacation will minimize the chances of a theft whilst you are gone. A little bit of common sense to secure your house and valuables will give you peace of mind while you are traveling overseas.

Absolutely nothing will ruin a vacation like finding out your house got broken in to while you were gone. Adhere to these common sense tips to ensure much better security during your travels. An ounce of security prevention is worth a pound of cure. Be secure and have an excellent vacation.

  1. As a family, we travel a considerable amount - we take off almost every weekend on little road trips and a couple of times a year on larger planned vacations. We don't have a professional security system at home, because honestly, I haven't felt the need for it so far. I use a very basic webcam monitoring service that's available off the internet. What I've done is - set up 2 webcams, one each at both points of entry to my house. I have a sofware (GotoCamera) that i've downloaded, which sends me an email alert every single time there's any motion that is detected in front of my webcam. So basically, if a burglar enters, he's not only caught on camera, but I'm also informed about it immediately. All this costs me less than $4 a month. The reason i'm writing such a detailed note is that i know a bunch of people who don't know ways to take care of their homes while away on vacation. Since I do, I hope it helps out atleast a few people who don't. Currently, I use GotoCamera: www.gotocamera.com for the webcam software. If any of you happen to come across other good options, do let me know! Thanks!
