Places of Interest in Tenerife

By Chloe J. Hudson

The largest and most populous of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is also the most populous island in Spain. In fact, it takes up almost 45% of the total population of the Canary Islands. Despite the fact that it sounds pretty full already, the island draws in five million tourists every year, and each year the population of expats goes up too. It's pretty certain, then, that there are places on this island, and things to do, that unswervingly hold people's interest from all over the world.

The Teide National Park is one of Tenerife's most spectacular places. It is home to Mount Teide which is the third biggest volcano in the world, and is visible from anywhere on the island. The park also includes interesting rock formations, and another volcano called 'Pico Viejo' which has an 800 metre crater. If natural beauty is what interests you, then this part is certain to be top of your list of where to go in Tenerife.

Another interesting place to visit on this island is the capital city, Santa Cruz. You can see one of Spain's busiest ports there, and also enjoy much of the island's culture and history. It is also considered to island's best place for shopping, for along the sea front it has some great retailers. And the shopping is at tax free prices!

Among some of the natural and manmade structures you can visit are the Guimar Pyramids, which opened in 1998 and include six pyramids and a museum, and the Icod de los Vinos (Cave of Wind) which is the largest volcanic cavity in the world, as well as home to the ancient Dragon tree. This tree is absolutely stunning, and is said to be 800 years old.

Tenerife also offers some activities that are more family oriented, such as wind surfing, or visiting some of the local wildlife in animal sanctuaries. There is always the option of just visiting the beach, for Tenerife's year long summer sunshine means that the weather will always be perfect. Tenerife has much of interest to offer.
