Be One With Nature On A Tanzania Safari

By Jocelyn Davidson

One of the most spectacular sights in the world is the migration of thousands of wildebeest in search of greener pasture. This happens every January or February in East Africa. The grassy plains come alive with not only wildebeest but also zebra, various species of antelope and predators such as lions waiting for easy pickings among the stampeding masses. If you want to see Mother Nature in all her glory, you can't go wrong with a Tanzania safari.

The Republic of Tanzania is located in East Africa, with Kenya to the north and Mozambique to the south. The country has a long and colorful history and is a popular tourist destination. This is no surprise, with magic places such as the island of Zanzibar, with its Arabic architecture and great beaches, to explore.

Some visitors come to the country to enjoy its beaches and world-class diving but for most, a true highlight is going on safari. You'll find packages designed with your specific interests in mind, whether these are hunting, photography or local culture. At the same time, you'll get to understand why Africa manages to find a permanent place in the hearts of all who visit her.

Most packages will take you to one or more conservation areas or national parks. Among these are the world-famous Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha National Park, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest peak. Bring a pair of binoculars to help you spot the many species of bird as well as animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, warthogs and monkeys, not to mention the wildebeest.

If you're on a budget, you may want to opt for a safari company that offers basic packages where you're roughing it. However, it's well worth splashing out on a package that includes luxury accommodation, gourmet meals and guided game-watching trips. There's nothing more romantic than enjoying a cocktail as the sun sets and later retiring to a tastefully furnished tent while listening to the sounds of hyenas in the distance.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, which normally falls within the first few months of the year. Even though it is almost unbearably hot, the lack of rain means that animals tend to congregate near watering holes where they're easy to spot. The vegetation is less dense too, so it's more difficult for the wildlife to hide among the trees. Bear in mind that malaria is a risk, although this illness is more prevalent during the rainy season.

As one of Africa's premier tourist destinations, Tanzania has a well-developed tourism infrastructure. If you come here for the wildlife, you'll probably need to fly into either Dar es Salaam or into Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha. There are direct flights from destinations elsewhere in Africa as well as from Europe, the Middle East and India.

An easy way to visit is to opt for an all-inclusive safari package. Your travel agent will be able to find one for you or you can look online. Book well in advance though.
