Men are going through midlife crises, yes, but what about women. They both go through this uneasy period of life, but they have different problems and they react differently. It doesn't mean that female midlife crisis is easier, just the opposite. Men will try to overcompensate their lost years, but women might experience more serious problems.
If you spend your life caring for someone's needs, for your parents, husband, children, you didn't get the opportunity to self-realize. You simply never had time to have interesting hobbies, to make a career, to write a novel or to travel. Maybe you are quite satisfied with your accomplishments as wife and mother, but one large part of you is still missing.
Working women usually have fewer problems with this type of crisis. They are more than just wives and mothers, they earn their money and they have their own careers. This is really important, even if you don't have any especially interesting job. Maybe your life was harder, but this transition period will probably be easier for you.
Once your children leave your home, you suddenly have too much free time. At first, the house is empty and too big, too silent. If your husband is still working, you can wrap your life around taking care of his needs, but it won't be enough for long. At some point, you will have to find something that will occupy you.
Another problem related to this period of life is accepting physical changes of your face and body. You can still be really attractive, but the fact is that middle aged woman won't stop the traffic. Yesterday you were still young and sexy, and today people see someone else. And you still feel so young inside.
At one point in your life people will inevitably start to perceive you as a middle aged woman. One morning you will realize that your youth is gone, and there is no point in dreaming about new and different life. You simply don't have time or energy to do some things you were putting away for so long.
You can find a job, now when you have time to make a career. The problem is that they hire young people. In fact, there are only few places where they are willing to hire someone with almost no experience, and with more than forty years of age. If you don't have very good connections, this could be hard to accomplish.
Your first reaction will be shock. You might get angry, you might fall into depression, you just shouldn't lose your hope. It might be hard if you are going through menopausal changes at the same time, because all these issues together are hard to fight.
After all that, it would be strange if you didn't get into a midlife crisis. But, things aren't so black. You are perfectly capable to overcome all this. You are beautiful, confident, capable woman with so much to offer. You just need to find something that will occupy you, and you have to start over. It is never too late.
