The East Bay: Fairs, Festivals & Fun

By Madeleine Glazier

Attractions and annual events are definitely always available in the areas of San Francisco and also Oakland but do you know that Alameda or Contra Costa County can offer you quite a number of fun festivals and celebrations which residents take pride of yearly as well? Perhaps you would like to get to know some of them, especially if you are considering a permanent move to the scenic East Bay.

It should not surprise you that Walnut Creek was named because of the abundance of native California walnut trees in the area. And so the festival it is most popular for is Walnut Festival! However, it is interesting to note that the festival actually was celebrating the local grape crops and was called the Grape Festival. Once Prohibition outlawed the production and sale of alcohol, farmers decided to farm for walnuts instead. Come the month of September, the Walnut Festival takes place yearly and people join in the fun of the twilight parade, 5K-10K run and yes, the ever-famous carnival amongst other fun things too.

As for the jazz enthusiasts, Concord is your jazz hotspot. The famous jazz musician Dave Brubeck and Brubeck Park was named in his honor. Initially concentrating on jazz, Concord Records was also born here. Carl Jefferson was its founder and he also started the Concord Jazz Festival. And ever since its birth in the year 1969 this festival has become an annual tradition in Concord.

It may not be Hollywood but you can surely find lots of interesting film festivals in East Bay. Both the Orinda Film Festival and the California Independent Film Festival were hosted by and held at the historic Orinda Theatre. Another famous annual event in Danville is the Danville International Children's Film Festival. Several other film festivals can be found held in Oakland and Berkeley.

Both counties have a yearly county fair which includes a wide variety of events. The annual Alameda County Fair, which runs from mid-June until just after the Fourth of July, includes a petting zoo, livestock and small animal exhibits, as well as live music, arts and crafts and a huge variety of contests and competitions for all ages. The Contra Costa County Fair is a four-day affair in early June that includes a carnival, live music, livestock exhibits, cooking contests and even a monkey show.
