Relocation: Making The Process Easier

By Joyce McIntosh

When you move just a few miles away from your old house, you are already familiar with the area. However, when you move out of the area and far away, it can be a bit more challenging. So for those who are relocating to a new city, here are some helpful hints to make the whole process easier.

One of the most important tasks to take care of in a big relocation move is to find good movers. You need to be sure to that your company is experienced with out-of-state or out-of-area moves and offers moving insurance. It is very unwise to hire a mover over the phone or internet. Movers need to come out and take a look at what is going to be moved to properly estimate the cost of the move. And be sure to get that estimate in writing.

Truly one of the best things about moving is that it provides you with a real opportunity to assess your belongings. You will definitely find tons of items that you no longer need and want, and you can donate these items and give them away. Not only will these mean you have less to pack, it can help to lower your moving costs. Reducing clutter also can reduce stress, so reducing your possessions will also make life a great deal easier at your new home.

Often when you move a long distance, you have to wait a while before moving into your new place. Perhaps you haven't selected a new home or escrow hasn't closed or you just want to make some renovations before you unpack tons of belongings. For any of these circumstances, the easiest option is to place your items in a self-storage facility.

When looking around for storage companies, select a facility with good security. This includes having security monitors installed around the premises, which also should have plenty of lights and a fence surrounding it. Because you probably don't need storage for a long time, select a company that offers monthly rental rates rather than a long term contract.

In the days and weeks leading up to the move, be sure to spend some time each evening online getting to know your new town. Locate and research the schools, find out where grocery stores and restaurants are located. Learn a little bit about the community in general, including any fun festivals and events that might take place during the year. When searching for new doctors and health providers or even services such as dry cleaners and plumbers, don't be afraid to ask neighbors and realtors for their advice.
