By Shane Leon Sims

Tourists visiting the city of London will find many types of accommodation available to them, from expensive international hotel chains to independently run hostels. Those looking for a cheap hotel London stay can find rooms throughout the metropolitan area, including in areas where they can take in the sights and cultural background of the area.

Hotels kings cross may not have the features of the more expensive places to stay. Often they require sleeping in communal rooms, pod beds, or sharing bathroom and shower facilities. Hostels are a very inexpensive option for those that meet whatever kind of requirements the hostel may have. Some ask that guests be within a certain age range, while others may serve gender specific clientele.

Before it became the Greater London of modern times, there were actually two cities that made up the area. The City of Westminster was the home of the government and still is to this day, including Parliament and Buckingham Palace. The City of Londinium contained many of the financial institutions, and today also contains a large portion of the London business district.

The sprawling metropolitan area makes up the 9th largest city in the world, as well as the largest city in the European Union. It is so large, in fact, that if it were its own country, it would be the eighth largest country in the world. It is home to many internationally known chains of stores, restaurants, and business, as well as attractions unique to the area. Traditional pubs, family-owned stores, and sporting event arenas can be found here as well.

The Tube, otherwise known as the Underground, was the first transportation system of its kind built in the world. In service since 1863, it travels under most of London and is used for daily commuting purposes by both residents and visitors to the area. It is so large it can be confusing for new passengers, so they are urged to make use of maps and information services.

Part of the Tube system, the Angel Tube Station holds a record of its own. It is home to Western Europe's longest escalator, containing 318 steps. At a busy time of day, it can take longer to ride this escalator than it would to walk up or down the stairs.

Another record-holder in this ancient city is the Canary Wharf Tower, which holds the title of Tallest Building in London. It stands at 800 feet tall, dwarfing the rest of the Docks and Canary Wharf area. It became a popular tourist attraction after serving as a setting for an alien invasion in the television series "Doctor Who" and later its spin-off series "Torchwood".

Whether a visitor to the city stays in a luxury hotel or in a cheap hostel, they will have the same chance to experience all of the fun and exciting things that the city has to offer. With as much history and culture as this one has, it could take a lifetime of visits before someone could experience everything.
