Route 66 Is One Of The Major Travel Destinations By Car

This famous stretch of road, Route 66, is no longer shown on most maps. Everyone thinks of this 2,448 mile long highway when major travel destinations by car are discussed. Called the Mother Road, it is no longer shown on many maps. However, many families still plan to vacation from the beginning to the end on this famous highway.

Travelers have driven across the country on this most revered route ever since. Start from St. Louis and travel some interesting detours for sightseeing purposes. Visit legendary roadside buildings and other attractions along the highway from St. Louis to Chicago.

Cross the original road to St. Louis over the notable Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Visit the famous Gateway Arch, known as the Gateway to the American West. Stop to take a ride through it with your family.

You may know that pioneers in covered wagons going to settle the West, carved out the trail that is now Route 66. A Museum of Westward Expansion located at the site of the Arch has exhibits detailing this bit of history. Drive by Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, home to the All Shook Up, peanut butter and banana custard shake. It is the perfect sweet treat for Elvis fans.

Visit the oldest tourist stop on Route 66, which is Meramec Caverns. It is the site of Jesse James hideout, where he and his gang stored money and kept horses hidden. Wind through the Ozark Mountains and have beauty all around you. Watch the side of the road for Sheas, the gas station that is a Route 66 shrine.

This historic route is one of the major travel destinations by car in the United States. Travel to Las Vegas and on to California. No traffic jams or airport checkpoints will mar your journey. Many roadside attractions will require no extra driving and you can stop and explore as often or as rarely as you wish.
