EBC And Gokyo Ri Trekking

By Ted Davies

One of the most stunning journeys in the world is the Everest Base Camp Trek. This trek will let you enjoy spectacular scenery amid souring Himalayan mountains, as well as old Buddhist monasteries all the way to Everest; the highest mountain the world.

The journey usually begins from Lukla, which can be reached via Kathmandu airport; it is spectacular flight. Another alternative is to trek from Jiri, which is a bus ride from Kathmandu; this will take trekkers through beautiful Nepali villages to Namche Bazarre, at the start of the high Himalaya.

It is extremely important that the body is given a change to adjust to the high altitude on this trek. This can be done by staying at Namche Bazzare for a day or two. A days walk up to the fascinating Tyangboche Monastery and back is a great way to avoid altitude sickness.

The journey can be done in a number of ways. It is possible to head straight to base camp and back, but those with more time may want to consider trekking to Gokyo Ri, where there are better views of the highest mountain in the world. Just take a different trail towards Gokyo just after Namche; once at Goyko it is possible to climb up a small trekking peak at over 6000 meters to enjoy amazing views over the Everest massive. Trekkers can then head back from Gokyo and take the Chola pass over to the base camp trail and head to base camp before returning to Namche Bazarre. This whole trip will take approximately one month.

Porters and guides can be arranged from reputable trekking companies in Kathmandu. However, it is possible to go independently as there are many others on the trails. It is recommended; however that you do not go to Gokyo and the Chola pass alone.

Do an online search for Everest Base Camp Trek companies in Kathmandu, as they will be able to provide further advice and help to prepare a truly spectacular experience.
