Are You Aware Of The Joys Of Caravan Living?

By Samson Smythe

Forget the stresses of finding accommodation for your holiday, take your own caravan. There is so much freedom and you can pitch up in some very nice locations surrounded by natural beauty, mostly far better locations than you could have if you were staying in a hotel.

A caravan vacation is very cost effective, but if you want to buy your own caravan then you will need to fork out much larger sums of money. So many people search for used caravans for sale to help them get onto the caravan band wagon and there are a few things that you need to look out for.

Of course you want to first of all take into account its general condition, is it tatty and does it look like it's not been looked after? If so then this is definitely a warning signal as the rest of it is probably also in bad order. Some bad paint work can be fixed up easily so you don't need to reject a caravan just because of a bit of peeling paint. In fact you might even want to consider giving it a fresh coat of paint anyway.

There are many newspapers, magazines and internet websites where you can search for caravans that people are selling, so take some time to research and once you've found some that are interesting, make a time to go and view them. Check the interior, unless you are specifically planning on doing a restoration job then you want something half decent. Often the seats are worn in second hand caravans although this need not be a major concern as it won't be too expensive to have the fabric replaced, or even replace the seats from a caravan that is being scrapped.

All of the electrical systems in the caravan should be in good working order and you must check this out. Hiring an electrician to sort out any problems there may be can be expensive and time consuming. Check all the other appliances as well like water and drainage. Make a check of the other fitted amenities and ensure everything is working and in good order.

If everything in the interior checks out ok then give it a thorough inspection outside. You should be looking out for any major patches of rust as these could present a problem, plus check the overall paintwork condition. Small areas of bad metal can easily be remedied. You should also check the construction of the walls, are they stapled together or sealed with glue also? They need to be sealed properly to keep the water out, resealing it yourself can be done, but preferably avoided.

If the exterior checks out then next look underneath the caravan, it's worth taking the time to properly examine the parts that can't normally be seen, take a torch along with you as you'll probably need it. Check the condition of the wheels as well, tyres are easily replaced so don't worry if they are worn. The most important thing is that the metal frame underneath is structurally sound otherwise you could be looking at some expensive repairs.

Pay attention also to the towing hook to make sure it's all in great condition.

There are lots of used caravans for sale so don't think you have to jump at the first one you see if it's not exactly what you're looking for, but on the other hand don't miss out on a bargain!
