5 must does in Barcelona

By David Leigh

Barcelona is chock-full of things to do and see and when your time is so limited, as it is for the majority of UK visitors to the town who stay for a weekend or merely slightly longer, you need to make certain you rigorously plan to make sure you see what you actually came to see.

Hence here is my list for you to see and do while in Barcelona, ensuring that you get lots of time to sit out in the sunshine slurping a coffee or something stronger while people watching and getting to taste some of the local food and truly immerse yourself in the culture.

1. Sagrada Familia is that rather initially designed church which has been under assembly for at least a century but now the end is in sight. Who knows when it will essentially open its doors properly to the business of worship, but now it does provide an interesting view of Gaudi's strategies as well as the way in which the city has changed since the project first started. Other Gadui must sees are Casa Batllo and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gracia, as well as Parc Guell; all provide more of the same and can be seen from the tourist bus if you don't want to do it on foot.

1. The Nou Camp is one of the world's most famous stadiums, although it is actually called "Camp Nou" in Catalan and for some unknown reason the word order has been modified when used in English. Whatever, but get some Barcelona tickets if they're playing at home, or the stadium tour and museum is definitely worth doing, with the trophy cabinet stacked full of silverware.

1. Walk down the Ramblas. It's that simple. This famous street is totally full of entertainers of varied types including human statues and musicians but look out for the swindlers and bag snatchers. It's a bit too touristy nowadays, but worthwhile all the same.

1. Get lost in the roads of the barri gotic or gothic quarter. While it used to be quite seedy, the place has been cleaned up and nowadays there are numerous bars, trattorias and small shops, perfect for buying a souvenir or two. You can come across some small squares that are worth passing some time folks watching too , ideally from a table outside one of the bars. And you may come across the gothic cathedral that towers above the old town.

1. Hop on the tourist bus. You'll save tour legs and for an opretty reasonable price you will be able to get around the town quickly and easily and see the rest there is to see. When you reach a stop which has something of interest, hop off. Hop on again until the next stop of interest. And in the meantime get to see lots of the rest of Barcelona and get an understanding of it.

That is my list of 5 "must does" while in Barcelona, have a superb time while you're still there!
