The Ultimate Vacation Is When You Board A Train While Traveling In Europe

By Eric Simmons

Traveling in Europe has long been the dream destination of many vacationers. The diversity of cultures affords a true look at the world and the colorful beauty of every region. There are many states just waiting to be explored, from the giant Russia, to the tiny but powerful Vatican City.

Getting around can be as exotic as sea cruises, or as simple as walking. If you want to explore volcanoes or just enjoy relaxing in the sea air, cruise ships are a perfect selection. The cost may be prohibitive to the budget-conscious traveler, though. More affordable, ferries can get passengers to the thousands of small islands on the sea or on inland waterways.

Feel like you are walking through history as you board one of the famous trains to get to your destination. An extensive infrastructure of railway track lets residents and tourists get almost anywhere by rail. The super fast trains are expensive, but blindingly fast. Even used to get from the airport to the cities, airport-train rails are inexpensive and convenient. No need to stand in line for a taxi when the quick airport train can get you to the city fast.

Night trains have sleeping compartments for long journeys in the first class area of the train. But if you are traveling on a budget, second class has couchettes for resting. Simply go to sleep, and when you wake up you can be at your destination. Do not forget your camera if you decide to take one of the legendary scenic trains. You will love the mountains, glaciers and lakes that drift by as you are safely transported on a sightseeing tour of the countries. Interrail passes are the most economical way to see the different countries by rail. The passes are valid for months and offers unlimited travel in 30 countries.

Whether for an afternoon, a day or for months, backpacking has been a dream vacation for many young students. Cycle touring is a favorite pastime. Tourists fly to their destination, then bicycle through the country to get to know the people and customs of the area.

Many areas encourage cycling, and even have specific bicycle lanes for visitors who want to enjoy the countryside. If a grand bicycle tour is too much, but is still intriguing, rent a bicycle for a day or two. Many areas rent bicycles for tourists who want to see the country by bicycling, but not a full-fledged cycling vacation.

For some people the best vacation plans start at home, researching the area and deciding on each stop. For others, the best plan is no plan and they travel where the winds take them. For those who are in the middle, it is good to find out what the weather might be like, regulations and any emergency numbers for the areas that will be visited.

Like anywhere in the world, use your common sense when traveling. Petty thieves sometimes target tourists. Make sure your vacation is a fond memory and keep copies of your passport and ID cards with someone at home. Travelers in the know suggest wearing a money belt that fits snugly against the body to store important documents and money. Whether you are on a strict budget or on an expensive tour, traveling in Europe will be fun and remembered for years to come.
