Fun And Exciting Things To Do In North Wales

By Sam Jones

Wales is one of three principalities that make up the island nation of Great Britain. The other two are England, whose counties of Cheshire and Shropshire form the eastern border of North Wales, and Scotland. North Wales is bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and by Mid Wales to the south. Some of the best things to do in North Wales are visiting castles, white water rafting, pony trekking and sampling the regional cuisine.

Caernarfon Castle, situated in Gwynedd County, is where Prince Charles received the insignia of the Prince of Wales (making him the 21st to hold the title) from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The eleventh century castle was completely rebuilt by King Edward I. The investiture took place on the first of July, 1969.

Portmeirion, in the county f Gwynedd, is a popular Italianate tourist village designed by Sir Clough William-Ellis (1883-1978), an English born, Welsh architect. Completed in 1975, the village is perhaps most famous as the setting for 'The Prisoner', a cult television show from the 1960s. The program starred Patrick McGoohan and combined the genres of spy fiction and psychodrama.

Pony trekking under the guidance of a trained expert is a fabulous means of exploring the beautiful Welsh scenery. The first-time rider is gently introduced to the sport of horseback riding by the Welsh Cob, the gentlest of four-legged beasts.

White water rafting is another great way to explore the countryside. Experienced guides take individuals or small groups of visitors at the National Whitewater Centre down the tumultuous waters of unspoilt Snowdonia. The Center also offers kayaking and canoe trips.

Visiting castles, pony trekking and whitewater rafting are only a few of the fun and exciting things to do in North Wales. There are ample caverns, tramways and waterfalls to be experienced. The Welsh are also producers of cider, both alcoholic and soft.
