Spend some time with us this year in Sheridan WY and you will doubtless determine we are so very much more than a Wild West town. Within a reasonably short drive of this city of 16 thousand citizens in the Big Horns you'll find summertime fun in each flavor.

Sheridan Outdoor Journeys

Did we mention the Big Horn Mountains? With tops from five to thirteen thousand feet, they offer challenges for the most trail-hardened mountain biker. Experienced riders should definitely try the Tongue River Shuttle, a wild eleven-mile downhill race along the river.

Fishermen will find their thrill in mountain streams boasting brook and rainbow trout in amazing cold, clear waters. A few resevoirs and streams dot the mountains, including beautiful Big Horn Reservoir and Clear Creek, also prized by canoers.

If northeastern Wyoming doesn't make you think of golfing, you may want to think again. Early settlers from Scotland brought their love of the game along, and the area around Sheridan boasts four gorgeous courses to master. Powder Horn Golf Club's mountain course is a selected fave among the neighbors.

Those preferring to walk sans a golf bag can follow tree-lined tracks for miles through Big Horn Countrywide Forest. For notable multi-day walks, plan some time for the Edelman or Paint Rock Trails. You will find beautiful mountain camping areas along most tracks, so be sure to pack your bed roll and be prepared to catch some Z's out beneath the Milky Way.

Sheridan Wyo's Historic Legacy

We can't, of course, pay no attention to the historic importance of the area. Within an hour's drive of Sheridan you will find many battlefields depicting the battle between Indigenous Americans and early settlers.

Little Big Horn Battlefield, location of General Custer's massacre at the hands of Sitting Bull's warriors, sits right over the state line in Montana. This lonesome plain presents a touching history lesson for everyone. A number of other significant battlefields near Sheridan WY chronicle the triumphs and losses controlled by famous U.S. Cavalry officers and such Indigenous American legends as Crazy Horse.

History buffs can find masses of other sites to explore near Sheridan ranging from dinosaur exhibits to the beautifully preserved Sheridan Main Street District. Stroll through vintage shops, museums and galleries and soak up the region's history first hand.
