Living the Hipster Life in Vegas

By Robert Nickel

Urban Dictionary defines hipster as "One who possesses tastes, social attitudes, and opinions deemed cool by the cool. The hipster walks among the masses in daily life but is not a part of them and shuns or reduces to kitsch anything held dear by the mainstream." Las Vegas is the self proclaimed Entertainment Capital of the World, the Marriage Capital of the World and has repeatedly topped the list as the world's highest-grossing gambling center. A hipster in Las Vegas does seem a tad contradictory, but there appears to be a growing population of the subculture in Sin City so we shall explore it.

The first rule of being a hipster is to not admit you are a hipster, however in seeking like-minded people of the same fashion sense and with less than the obligatory 2% body fat, we can suggest a few places of interest. The Attic is one of the largest second hand clothing stores in Las Vegas. There is a cover charge at the door, but it goes towards your purchase and in a massive place like The Attic there is sure to be something for the discerning hipster.

The arts is certainly a part of hipster interest, so be sure to check out The Arts Factory. There are a surplus of amateur and professional art galleries just waiting for perusal. Close to the Factory is the antique district with funky little holes in the wall like Gypsy Caravan and The Funk House. There is also Unica Home, a post modern furniture outlet just ripe for hipster trust fund dollars. The pieces in there are decidedly anti-mainstream, expensive and stellar.

If you and your crew are wandering the streets looking for skinny-jeaned counterparts and a drink, head to Beauty Bar. Live shows are common, but don't let that change your mind because the bands are almost always unkempt and stuffed into (yes, more) skinny jeans. The Griffin is next door, but it harkens back to the jukebox age and may bring up feelings of inadequacy and the parental units. The Double-Down Saloon is a classic rundown Punk bar perfect for the wildly subdued side of any hipster or hipster wannabe. Loud music, cheap bevies and grime are on the menu.

Las Vegas has the lights, the resorts, the casinos, the minute-made weddings, the world class entertainment and the mainstream in the palm of its hand. In the other hand is the back-alley funk full of the dregs of Las Vegas - perfect for the hipster in all of us.
