Menorca Hotels: Discover The Jewel Of The Balearics

When an island is given the nickname of the 'jewel of the Balearics', it has quite a reputation to live up to. Considered more tranquil than its Balearic counterparts Mallorca, Ibiza and Formenta, Menorca hotels offer the intrepid tourist a relaxed break miles from the hustle and bustle and stresses of everyday life. If it's a hazy beach life and days spent sunning yourself on the beach you're after, you couldn't go anywhere better than Menorca. And if you do tire of sunbathing and book reading, there are towns to visit and museums to discover.

With its exceptionally crystal clear turquoise waters and fine sandy beaches, you can spend days at different beaches when staying in hotels in Menorca. Arenal Den Castell is a large, classic beach you'd expect to see on a postcard. Set in a huge circular bay, it is shadowed by sandy dunes and rising cliffs whilst the shallow water makes it safe for families with small children. Cala en Brut isn't a beach as such, but still a breathtaking place to visit for a sunbathe. The area has been created so sun worshipers can sunbathe on platforms on a long rocky inlet - the whole feel is of a natural swimming pool. Algaiarens, on the north coast, is like a scene out of an adventure film - minus the baddies and imminent danger! The beach is set in a valley backed by sand dunes and woodland, creating a grand bay of multiple beaches to choose from. These are just some of the favourite beaches in Menorca, but why not discover your own?

The architecture and natural formations in Menorca are another reason it's been titled "the jewel" and a great reason to get up off that sun lounger and discover more of the island. Hire a car for a day or two and spend some time exploring. Start with the Cales Coves which date back to ancient times and are carved into the side of cliffs. Once used as the burial chambers for the island's early settlers, this is now a picturesque point and beauty spot. Next, head to Ciutadella, the island's second town but considered the most interesting. The former capital city is an exciting and beautiful mix of Moorish, Baroque and Gothic architecture, revealing the island's history through the ages. It is also home to Menorca's oldest building, the cathedral. After that, enjoy a tipple or three at the Xoriguer Distillery, an 18th century gin distillery where visitors are shown how the spirit is made and the best part, sample some of its produce.

With the abundance of hotel deals, year-round sunshine and enjoyable mix of beaches and sight-seeing, Menorca is not just the jewel of the Balearics, but a jewel in its own right.
