Anyone Seeking A True Thrill Should Try Swim With Alligators

By Alta Alexander

There is always something in the news from somewhere around the world of people getting attacked by crocodiles and alligators. Many people try to avoid coming into contact with them while others prefer to actually swim with alligators. Some actually have kids' parties and they seem to be a big hit.

The average adult alligator can reach up to four metres sometimes fourteen feet and can weight anything from three hundred and sixty kilograms to about four hundred and fifty. The biggest one that was stumbled across was over nineteen feet and resided in Louisiana. The smallest one is just over one metre and is the Cuvier's dwarf caiman. They only weigh about seven kilograms or fifteen pounds.

Many people actually keep these animals as pets but if one is looking for a friendly and loving animal it is advisable to give this one a miss. Many experts say that these animals should never be kept and should instead go for the geckos, skinks or even the non poisonous snakes. Only those that have the resources to keep these and are very experienced can look into it. They are exceptionally expensive to keep as well.

If ever one comes across one crossing a road do not attempt to move it. It will eventually move along by itself so just be patient. They generally move around during the breeding seasons which are summer and spring. Also never throw anything at them as this can cause injuring or even killing them and it is punishable by a big fine or days spent behind bars.

Try to avoid any areas that they inhabit or otherwise always have someone with. Keep the splashing to a minimum as they generally will come to investigate thinking there is any easy catch. They are animals and will always act on instinct and ultimately will attack.

If ever coming across a nest or baby alligators rather leave them alone. The mother might not be seen but she is in the close proximity of her babies and if they are in danger she will not hesitate to attack. Sometimes she may just hiss or lunge and this is her way of indicating that one is too close to her family.

The next is the placement of the teeth. In the lower jaw of the alligator it is wider than the upper jaw and overlaps it so the teeth in the lower jaw are totally hidden when the mouth is closed. The forth upper tooth does tend to show when the jaw is shut. In the crocodiles both jaws are about the same allowing the teeth to show and the lower tooth is noticeable as well.

The babies seem to prefer smaller areas as it helps them to feel secure but as they grow larger bigger enclosures are a must. There should be some rocks and plants in the area where they will soak up the sun or a light bulb. The temperature should be around ninety five degrees Fahrenheit and if there is water it needs to be changed weekly.
