Escape Into The Wild With Foggy Bottom Canoe In Kingston Springs

By Janine Hughes

Living in the big city can be stressful. Every once in a while, you need to get back to nature so that you can relax and recharge your batteries. Near Nashville this is easy to do. With Foggy Bottom Canoe you can enjoy the Tennessee wilderness as part of a quick weekend getaway.

The town of Kingston Springs lies a little over twenty miles to the west of Nashville, in Cheatham Country. It's about half an hour's drive to get here. The small town with about three thousand residents is located along a bend in the Harpeth River and makes for the perfect country getaway.

For a lazy day out, head to Kingston Springs City Park. There are picnic facilities here and the lawns are perfect for a ball game. The park lies right along the river as well, so it's easy to go for a swim or a paddle. If you're looking for serious adventure, though, make the short drive northwards to the local zipline course.

The star of the show in the area is the meandering Harpeth River with its many bends. Here you can go fishing or just have a swim. The best way to enjoy the river, though, is to rent a canoe and go paddling. You may even decide on a guided trip with the folks at Foggy Bottom. Because the river is calm, canoeing here is safe even if you've never done this before.

A highlight for many visitors to the area is the Narrows of the Harpeth. This area is located where two horseshoe bends in the river almost meet. Here you'll find the historic Montgomery Bell Tunnel, which cuts through almost 300 feet of limestone rock. Built in 1819, it was one of the USA's first water diversion tunnels. If you're interested in archaeology, you may also want to explore Mound Bottom, a Native American complex which dates from the Middle Ages.

To make your journey of exploration along the Harpeth River even more enjoyable, you'll need the right gear. Good hiking shoes are essential if you're planning on exploring the many hiking trails. Insect repellent is a good idea too. A good sunscreen, plenty of water and some snacks are important as well and don't forget to bring your bathing suit, especially if you're going canoeing.

The local climate is pleasantly warm and you can visit at any time of year. Even in winter there are plenty of mild days. However, it can be wet and uncomfortably humid. The end of summer and the beginning of fall are great times to visit, since these are the driest times of the year. Moreover, temperatures are still high enough to really enjoy a dip in the river.

The folks of Foggy Bottom and the Kingston Springs area can easily be visited for the day. Should you decide that you'd like to spend the night rather than drive back to Nashville, though, you'll find a range of accommodation options and restaurants in and around town. For popular weekends, such as around public holidays, it's best to book in advance.
