There's definitely more to New York than a visit to Manhattan. In fact, drive to the west central portion of the state and you will find a popular tourist destination - The Finger Lakes Region. Blessed with much natural beauty, this popular area also offers plenty of interesting shops, restaurants, museums and much more.
The Finger Lakes are thus called due to the long, skinny shape of each of these lakes and there are 11 in all, although there are a few other popular lakes in the region as well as the Erie Canal. Seneca and Cayuga are the largest Finger Lakes, although Canandaigua Lake and Keuka Lake also are quite popular. Most of the lakes are surrounded by parks which offer swimming beaches and boat launches. Boating, canoeing and kayaking all are quite popular activities. A few smaller lakes don't have proper swimming areas with lifeguards, so be sure to check online prior to your visit to the area.
Not only are these lakes known for the fun water activities, this is New York's premier wine region and there are easily 100 or more vineyards and wineries as well as craft breweries and distilleries. Wine tours are hugely popular along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, and a special $15 pass will allow you to visit more than 12 wineries around this picturesque lake. You also could opt to take a tour along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail or the Keuka Lake Wine Trail.
As you drive around the area, you will notice many lovely small towns, such as Marcellus, which is a lovely historic village with plenty of fun shops and restaurants. A visit to Chocolate Pizza Company on Main Street is a must. This shop offers a huge assortment of homemade treats, gourmet chocolates and, of course, plenty of different types of chocolate pizza. All of the pizzas are handmade and packed in adorable pizza boxes for a cute presentation.
The chocolate pizzas feature a crust of either milk or dark chocolate blended with handmade English toffee. From there, a variety of toppings might be added or you could opt for a pizza finished off with just a decorative splash of white chocolate. In addition to the pizzas, you can buy a huge assortment of other handmade treats as well as gift towers and gift boxes. If you can't make it to the Marcellus location, there is also a Chocolate Pizza Company shop in the town of Manlius, which is just east of Syracuse.
After you have enjoyed the fresh lake waters, sipped a glass of fine wine and sampled some chocolate pizza, you will be happy to know that there is still much more to see and do. For instance, thrill rides abound at the Seabreeze Amusement Park and on a hot day, you can cool off at Roseland Waterpark. If you love history, check out the Corning Museum of Glass or study up on the Underground Railroad at the Harriet Tubman House. You could easily spend two weeks exploring this region and not see everything it has to offer, so a return trip definitely should be planned.
