Try Mongolian Tours For The Ultimate Adventure

By Serena Price

Few things are as disappointing to the intrepid traveler than to arrive at their destination and then to encounter thousands of other tourists there. This is especially annoying if you want to experience the great outdoors. With Mongolian tours, you can escape the crowds and have the perfect adventure off the beaten tourist track.

Mongolia is a huge landlocked country bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. Its varied landscape, which ranges from steppes to mountains and even desert, offers unbeatable travel experiences. More importantly, no other country in the world has fewer people per square mile so you just might have that open space all to yourself.

A visit to Mongolia should include some time in its capital, Ulan Bator. Learn more about the country in the museums here and visit the beautiful Winter Palace and the Choijin Lama and Gandan monasteries. July marks the Naadam Festival with its competitions in wrestling, archery and horse racing. Venture just outside of the city limits for fantastic hiking and skiing.

The whole of Mongolia is a paradise for active travelers. Opportunities for hiking and trekking abound throughout the country. The Five Holy Peaks of Altai are a mountaineering mecca and the mountainous regions of the west also offer mountain-biking and whitewater rafting. The country's rivers and lakes are also great for tamer activities like canoeing and kayaking.

Even if you prefer tamer activities, you'll get to enjoy the stunning scenery of Mongolia. Uvs Nuur Lake is a popular destination and a World Heritage Site. The Gobi Desert is the place to go to if you've always wanted to see what dinosaurs' eggs or the Bactrian camel look like. In the Khustain Nuruu National Park you may be able to see rare wild horses or you may also want to consider a tour that allows you to experience the traditions of the eagle hunters.

Traditionally, Mongolians have been nomads. Many rural people still live the nomadic lifestyle and welcome visitors who want to know more about their culture and traditions. Visit some camel or reindeer herders or have the quintessential Mongolian cultural experience by spending some time with the many horsemen in the country. They may even treat you to their favorite drink, which is made of mare's milk that has been fermented.

Horseback or camel tours are great ways to explore the Mongolian countryside. If you prefer less traditional modes of transport, you may try Jeep safaris. The rural roads are quite bad so you'd need an off-road vehicle most of the time but motorcycles will work well too. For long journeys, taking the train or the bus might be our best option.

The peak season for Mongolian tours is in summer, usually from May to the end of August. If you prefer off-season travel, visit in September or even as late as October when days are still quite warm but nights are cold. For winter activities and cultural travel, the cold months are best.
