Make Summer An Adventure With Marthas Vineyard Fishing Charters

By Alyce Powell

When it's summertime, people living on the East Coast look for the perfect excuse to get out of the city for a while. Many head to cabins up in the mountains or the countryside. Even more rent summer homes at the coast, for example on Long Island. Those who are lucky enough head even further north to have a great family vacation at the place where the movie 'Jaws' was set. If they're very adventurous, they book Marthas Vineyard fishing charters to go out on the ocean.

Martha's Vineyard is an island in Massachusetts. At about 100 square miles, it's the third largest East Coast island. It's located just south of Cape Cod and is home to around 16,500 people. Traditionally its economy was based on fishing but now it's a very popular tourist destination, especially among the more affluent members of society.

The island has a moderate climate. Winter temperatures tend to be a little higher than on the mainland but because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, summers tend to be cooler. Summer weather is so pleasant that the island's population swells to around 100,000 people during the warmer months. Rain can fall throughout the year.

The original inhabitants of the area were the Wampanoag, who called the island Noepe. The first English settlement here was founded in 1642 and for a long time the islanders called their home Martin's Vineyard. While fishing has always been important to island life, the location became a whaling station that produced lamp oil and blubber.

The Vineyard has since established itself as a prime vacation spot. The rich, famous and powerful often own summer homes here. The most famous of its inhabitants are probably the Kennedy clan but many artists also come here to hide from the spotlight. Actor John Belushi loved it so much that he was buried on the island, in the town of Chilmark. Some of the more recent vacationers included the Clintons and the Obamas.

The beaches are one of the main attractions for visitors. There is a wine industry and the town of Oak Bluffs is home to the oldest carousel in America. Film festivals take place at various times throughout the year and these are the best times to visit for another favorite activity, that of celebrity spotting.

It's easy to get to the island even though it's not possible to get here by car. Flying in is a popular choice, with seasonal flights from airports in Boston and Providence and from further afield in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The rich naturally fly in by private jet. If you want to have a smaller carbon footprint, another option is to travel in by ferry from the mainland.

There are still several communities who make their living from the ocean and fishing is a popular tourist activity. Many fishermen now make their boats available to visitors. You simply need to ask around at the local harbors to find Marthas Vineyard fishing charters that will promise a great day out at sea. Just remember that this island was the location for the movie 'Jaws'.
