The Risks Of Traveling While Pregnant

By Terrie Joyner

While a woman is pregnant, her body will change in many ways. Her body will not be completely hers while there is a baby inside of her. Everything she does and everything that happens to her body will have a direct effect on that unborn child. Traveling while pregnant can be tough on her and she will need to take precautions to make sure she is doing everything she can for her and her child.

During pregnancy, the body will make everything that the mother and the baby need. One of those things is extra blood. The blood is needed by both mother and the baby for survival. The additional blood floating around in the system is necessary but can also be dangerous. Blood clots are a serious side effect of the excess blood that is found in the system.

To help prevent this, especially while on a trip of some sort, a woman will need to be moving around a lot. Getting up, moving her arms and legs, getting the circulation moving will be very beneficial to her and her unborn child. If a woman is mostly immobile, she is putting herself at risk for many conditions.

It is likely that there will come a time for a pregnant lady to travel. No matter the distance, there will be risks to it. Blood needs to circulate at a regular rate for it to do as it was intended to do. Where there is extra blood, there is a higher risk for inflammation and for swelling. This is especially true during a trip.

No matter which mode a woman is taking during her travels, there are ways for her to get up and move about. If she is in a vehicle, breaks can be taken. The car can be stopped and she can get out and move around. This will get her blood going and will wake her up a bit.

Even if the car she is in is not able to stop, there are things that can be done. She can bend and flex her legs. She can extend and bend her arms. All of these movements will get the blood flowing again and allow the muscles to do some work. Any little bit helps on any traveling trip.

If the mother to be is on a plane, there are still ways for her to get out and about. She could get up and go to the bathroom. She will have to walk there and this will help. If she has to stand in line, she can shake her legs out or do a little stretch. When in the bathroom, she can do more advanced stretches or even a few squats. In her seat, she can fidget some to get the blood going.

Pregnancy is different for every woman. Some enjoy it and others keep wishing it was over. No matter how the woman feels, there will be benefits and there will be risks to be concerned with. Traveling while pregnant is one of the risks. A woman will need to know what is going on with herself and will need to know different ways to keep herself and her baby safe.
