Fascinating Travel Destinations By Car

By Randy Burnside

[]When people think of vacationing, they often think of getting on an airplane and flying somewhere distant. However, there are incredible travel destinations by car that can be enjoyed by friends, couples, or entire families, such as Key West, Florida.

Following the highway from the southernmost tip of the mainland will help you get to Key West, which is actually the southernmost point of the continental US. The highway was completed in 1939, replacing railroad bridges that linked all the Keys to the mainland, after having suffered huge damages as a result of a hurricane.

The historic district of Key West is one of the main tourist attractions, also known as Old Town. Beautiful mansions can be found in this area, as opposed to New Town which boasts the airport, new developments, malls, and such.

As some would already know, the Keys lie in the Straits of Florida, where they divide the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Each body of water has its own current, which is obvious to the observer. When visiting this area, be sure to make your way down to the concrete buoy that marks the southernmost part of the continental US, which draws thousands of people each year. Peak season is also dry season which occurs between the months of November and April.

Some other interesting points and places to see include the lighthouse and the beautiful architecture especially found in Old Town. There are lots of museums and even the Tennessee Williams Theater And Cultural Arts Center.

Be sure to check The Butterfly and Nature Conservatory which boasts a huge tropical butterfly habitat under a glass dome which is about 5000 square feet in size, and Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden, which resembles the rain forest. Also, there is the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum to take in, which displays treasures found from nearby and distant shipwrecks.
