Home Security Ideas for Vacationers

By Mark Mahaffey

Do you refuse to go on vacations with your family because you do not want to leave your home unattended? It is true that criminals would love to break into your home while you are gone, because no one would be home to catch them. But rather than forfeit vacations, you can instead take some special measures to secure your home while you are gone.

Hiring a house sitter is a great idea when you are going on vacation. Because burglars are on the lookout for houses that are empty, hiring a house sitter will keep your house from being as tempting to a criminal because someone will actually be living in it. Encourage your house sitter to continue on with her life as usual-coming and going to work and school.

If you do not want to have a house sitter stay in your home while you are away, there are other things you can do to give the appearance of someone living in your house. For instance, hire someone to come and cut your lawn while you are away. Also, ask them to take your trash out and check your mail as well. Each of these things will cause your home to look occupied.

You can also try other techniques to make your home look appear lived in. You can buy light timers and attach them to several lights in your home. Just set the timers to turn your lights on and off at preselected times. Anyone outside will think that someone is inside the house! Another helpful tips is to leave the television; the voices from the television will be heard outside.

One of the best ways to deter home invasions however is by installing a home security system. Crooks have admitted that they would not break into a home that has a home alarm system! If you install one, be sure to get signs for your yard that let visitors know that you have a system in your home.

By connecting that system to a twenty four hour monitoring service, if someone does happen to break in, the alarm system can send an alert to the monitoring company. They can then call the police to travel to your home to check it out.
