Planning A Trip To Kelly Gang Country At Glenrowan

By Alison Little

Mention the name Glenrowan to just about any Australian and they will have flashes of Ned Kelly and his last stand spring to mind. Besides learning more about that salty chapter in Australia's colonial past, there is much to do in and around town, which makes it a popular choice for holiday makers.

To learn more about the days of bushrangers and Ned Kelly in particular, there is no place better. There are several museums and an animated theatre that bring to life Kelly's "last stand" against the police. There is a Ned Kelly Touring Route that ensures you visit all the important points in and around town that pertain to the Kelly Gang.

If you want history of a slightly different variety, then you can visit the Cobb and Co. Museum to learn more about the stage coaches that serviced Victoria in the 19th century. The Blacksmith Shop and Museum also offers a glimpse into life during this historical period with displays and information about the important trade.

The town and the area around it are well known for the excellent gourmet foods and fresh produce that is grown there. There are many wineries that can be visited and have garnered a strong national and international reputation. There are also farmers markets held where you can buy the produce and locally made products to take home with you. Food tours to the outlying areas of the town can be organized.

The area that surrounds the town is brimming with natural beauty that is just begging to be discovered. Nearby is the Warby Ovens National Park, where you will find blooming wildflowers, waterfalls and impressive views and rock formations. The Murray to Mountain Rail Trail is also a very popular choice for avid and even casual bush walkers. It makes use of a disused rail line and traverses stunning countryside.

If you prefer to see the countryside from the saddle of a bicycle or horse, then there are options available for this. You can find trail riding locations around town as well as bike hire to cover more distance than you would by hiking boot. There are also many four wheel driving tracks in the area, call into the town tourist centre to find out where you can safely go. If you like to live life on the wild side, why not opt for Harley Davidson tours of the local area and see it in a totally exhilarating way.

You can find many ideal camping spots in the national parks around the north east of Victoria. The Alpine National Park has charming sites where in the warmer months you can camp amid snow gums or fields of wild flowers. The Warby Ranges National Park has similar sites on offer to visitors too.

If you are travelling with children, there is plenty to do and see in and around Glenrowan for them. From discovering the turbulent past of the bushrangers and the territory that they attempted to control to visiting a range of natural wonders and sampling excellent wines and gourmet foods, there is much to enjoy on a vacation in Victoria's north east.
