The Absurdity of Multiple Official Black Friday Sites

By Kyle Dolcind

If by chance you are a resident of the United states, then at some point you have likely gotten on the internet to do a search for the phrase Black Friday. And you probably did this around the season of thanksgiving or Christmas in anticipation of one of the biggest shopping days of the year, if not the biggest. And when you performed said search you probably saw many websites that call themselves the official black Friday website.

What would your reaction be if you were to see, say, five of the ten websites listed as each being the 'official' Black Friday site? It would probably be the same as mine. You would probably say, "Hey now, what's going on?" Because you know that they all can't be the official site. Indeed, it would probably be the clue that there is no official web site for Black Friday.

But it is clear why we find a world wid web on the internet with so many distinct sites who all claim to be the official one for such an event as Black Friday. You see, Black Friday is not a brand owned by a single company or organization. It is more like a holiday shared by the entire populace at large, such as Valentine's Day or Mother's Day, or even April 15 tax day.

As much as a single company may wish they could own and trademark Black Friday, they simply cannot because it came about as a result of numerous consumer based stores that all happened to do something on the same day as a result of shopper behavior on a certain day after a holiday, namely the day after thanksgiving. It is really a rather interesting phenomenon if you stop to think about it.

But back to the original point, and that is this: you have all these web sites wanting to position themselves as the official and authoritative site for Black Friday. Yet almost none of them do anything to distinguish themselves and differentiate themselves from the others, either in what they offer or in their commentary such as their blog. As for me, I would care less about being the official site, and put my effort into offering something of serious value as a way to get searchers to want to visit.
