Increasingly necessary are Defensive Driving techniques. On our roads today, there are a lot of unskilled and reckless drivers and drivers are less likely to be involved in an accident with one if they learn to drive defensively.

How do you define Defensive Driving? Essentially it is driving your vehicle correctly, while at the same time adjusting your driving to take into account the possible and actual actions of less experienced or more aggressive drivers.

In fact, your aim should actually be doing some courses in Defensive Driving. You can only learn so much by reading.

How do I drive defensively?

You should expect the unexpected. You never know, around that blind bend there may be a runaway horse galloping towards you.

Avoid reacting to aggression from other drivers but you can expect that aggression to happen.

Use your mirrors and be aware of everything that is going on around you.

If necessary, you can know exactly how far you can pull over if you know the dimensions of your car.

While you are driving, avoid loud music. Being aware of everything that is happening to your vehicle and to others on the road around you is what you need to do.

Make sure your vehicle is well maintained, with tire pressures set correctly. If your vehicle is well maintained you will be able to adjust your speed more quickly and more safely to traffic and other conditions on the road around you.

When you are driving, all of your attention all of the time is needed. It's important for your passengers to understand that fact. You should avoid drinking soda, smoking, or using the phone while you are driving.

Looking for clues as to what other drivers are going to do is also a must.

These clues could be simple and they are similar to the lowered suspension favored by many aggressive drivers, or the direction another driver is looking in.

You should look which way the front wheels are turned.

Make sure to listen to gear changes that would tell you when another driver is getting ready to accelerate.

Watch the line other drivers take as they approach intersections, it gives you a good indication of where they are going, even if they do not use indicators.

Small children in other vehicles may distract the driver at a crucial instant so look out for them.
