5 Helpful Tips for Family Road Trips

By Gabrielle Knoss

Family vacations and getaways are great, just be sure to remember to plan your road trip as well. Sure, you can use websites as your map to your destination, but often times the basics on how to enjoy a road trip is overlooked.

Remember to bring music and DVDs

With music, not only can you pass the time but you also realize you actually have a shot to win on American Idol. To help keep your kids occupied, you could try putting on some classical CD or music from a kid's TV show. It wouldn't if you bring movies along, especially if there's a DVD player in your vehicle. Music can not only keep your kids occupied, it can also help pass the time or inspire the family for a sing-a-long.

Don't forget the snacks

Snacks are also essential on road trips. With the chaos of trying to get everyone out the door and into the car, simple things like bringing snacks are easily forgotten. Bring the plastic utensils if you bring snacks like yogurt or fruit cups. It's also a good idea to bring cleaning wipes, napkins, and paper towels. Kids plus food plus a moving vehicle equals mess.

Entertainment for the kids - check

To help alleviate boredom as well as keep your kids occupied, it may be a good idea to bring some games, books, and toys with you. Games like "I spy with my eye" can also help pass the time and even get your family involved. As long as your kids are occupied, traveling doesn't have to be stressful or distracting.

Remember to bring emergency supplies

Bring sun screen, blankets, first aid kits, etc. on your trip, depending of course, where your road trip is taking you. You'll be more at ease knowing you have basic supplies with you, just in case of emergencies or really bad traffic.

Remember to check your vehicle

Getting your vehicle tuned up is important before you hit the road. Get an oil change and make sure your fluids are up the proper level. It's a bad idea to be in an unfamiliar territory and have car trouble.

With these simple suggestions, your family road trip wouldn't be stressful so that when you arrive at your destination, you'll still be in a good mood with plenty of energy to spare.
