Philippines Holiday Celebration: Festive Holidays Celebrated in Jamaica

By John Roney

Jamaica is known to celebrate holidays in a festive and grand manner during the Junkanoo when big parades, costumed merrymakers, vigorous parties and great feasts are always expected. Yet aside from this Christmas holiday, Jamaica has more holidays to offer you. Here are the major holidays in Jamaica that you can look forward to when having a vacation in the island.

In the Western countries, Christmas is definitely a well-celebrated occasion focusing on the believed of Jesus being born during this day. In European countries where persons are mostly Christians, Christmas day is a holiday. The celebration starts on the eve of Christmas, December 24, where persons have to fast until the festive dinner is served. Youngsters are told to hold on their cravings for food to be sure that they can feast on a golden glazed turkey. Obviously, the holiday is incomplete without the gift-giving tradition and Santa calls. Typically, in these countries, gifts are placed under the Christmas tree and are opened on the eve of Christmas day. Also, as it has been said, Christmas is for the kids. With this, you will find countries that has a strong attachment to Santa Claus (or other characters equivalent to his image) and his gifts to good children. But still, each country has their special beliefs and traditions that they follow during the mentioned occasion.

Accompong Maroon Festival.Maroons are the recent generations of the escaped slaves of Jamaica. Every January 6th, these Maroons commemorate their leader Cudjoe for triumphing over the British during the 1700s. The beatings of maroon drums, blowing of Abeng and marching traditionally to the Kindah tree are just a few of the things to expect during this festival. Traditional singing, dancing, ceremonies and feasts are also enjoyed by both natives and visitors throughout the festival.

In Asian countries, similar picture can somehow be seen. In countries like China, Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Christmas is still an critical occasion even if it is not declared as a public holiday by their government. Like those in European countries, the tradition of gift giving in these countries is still present. The belief for Santa Claus is also embraced like a result of Western influences. Decorations like Christmas tree, lights, along with other dcors can also be observed in these countries despite the truth that you can find few Christians in their location.

The same Christmas carols are sung every year, and this makes the lyrics easy to remember. Nobody can say they can't recall the lyrics of White Christmas or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. If they don't know all the words, they can at least recall the chorus, and most people know these by heart. Karaoke music can make holiday gatherings more joyous when everyone comes together and sings their favourite songs.
