Riding The Continent In Comfort By Luxury Train Travel

By Bertulda Zerna

There was a time many years ago when the wealthy traveled through the countryside surrounding by luxurious comforts. They watched as the towns and villages passed by while eating fine foods and sitting on cushioned chairs. Their cars would be decorated with paintings on wood paneled walls. This was a far escape from the hard wooden seats and crowded surroundings of those sitting in the back. Today, there are companies specializing in the return of luxury train travel for those wishing to capture the wonderment of riding the rails.

Then in Europe a rail company created the first major luxury train for people. The Orient Express was developed to move people across the continent. A rider could find themselves surrounding by beautiful paintings, furnishings, and rooms. Those they wished more out of their journeys had finally found it. Many people think that this is a time that has passed us by, but there are companies like Rovos in South Africa, that still provide this experience to the discerning traveler.

Rovos Rail is based out of Pretoria, South Africa. They serve those wishing to go to places like Cape Town, Victoria Falls, or Tanzania. One should hop on board from the Capital Park Station and enjoy great amenities as they appreciate the scenery.

This is a company that has found old cars that were ready for destruction. They spent months putting them back into shape. Now they are a reflection of what once was and is now again. The dining cars sport white tablecloths filled with fine china and elegant silverware.

The lounge areas have leather chairs and cushioned sofas. One can open a window and breathe in the fresh air while taking in the sounds and smells of the South African countryside. This is especially thrilling when the cars are connected to a steam engine to give the full flavor of olden days.

One can move into an observation car to take in the full beauty of the scenery. These cars have large windows to make the viewing easier. A unique feature is the open air balconies where one can step out and feel the wind on their face.

Resting in a suite can be especially appealing. If one chooses they can sleep on a double bed. They can even bath in an old Victorian tub with legs.

Luxury train travel is not a thing of the past. One can find all the comforts that they might have thought disappeared decades ago. All one has to do is find their way to the station and climb on board.
