The Ebb And Flow Of Life In Bucharest

By Cornelius D. Lawford

The city of Bucharest Romania has a long history stretching back through a turbulent past In the city one may feel the ghosts of many folk who've been concerned in Western european civilization and empires that have been and gone. Regardless of its traditional roots the city only became the capital of Romania late in the nineteenth century.

In 1861 Wallachia and Moldavia were united in a dominion with Bucharest as a shining capital city. New buildings and high culture contributed to an atmosphere of refinement and grandeur. Some of the architecture emulated what had been done in Paris and during this period of prosperity the city was often called the 'Paris of the East'.

Development of the city was restrained by symptomatic floods for years. It stands on the Dambovita Stream which is a tributary of the Danube, and susceptible to flooding. When the brook was channeled in 1883 the flooding was stopped and the city became steadier. This improved development prospects.

Wars and political revolutions that ravaged Europe in the twentieth early and did not spare Romania or its capital city. German forces occupied the city in the First World War. Between the 2 world wars there was a brief period of prosperity until the disaster of the Second World War struck. As an Axis city Bucharest was bombed, turned over to the Allies and then bombed again by the Germans.

The Second World War stopped with a lot of east Europe countries falling foul of political ideologues who feathered their nests at the expense of their fellow citizens. Nicolae Ceausescue was Romania's candidate for puppet tyrant and he was able to do a great deal of damage before being hounded out in 1989. By that time he had destroyed many historical and beautiful buildings replacing them with commie style tower, blocks and iron monuments to communism.

In historic terms, Stalin's annexation of East EU states was transitive. Communist tyrants were ousted and diverse political movements began to explore the prospects for liberty and development. In the capital new suburbs began to grow, expanding the metropolitan areas round the city.

Bucharest occupies more than two hundred square kilometers of the Romanian plain. The area was once forest, and is low lying although the city has 7 hills, like Rome. The population is more than two million, lots of whom commute into the city on a daily basis.

This well watered city has many lakes and gardens strewn across it. There are floral gardens and museums the most noted being those that've been established round the synthesised Lake Cismigui. Restoration work is being carried out to restore much of the city's significant facades and architectural features.

The ebb and flow of industrial activity has washed several times over Bucharest Romania, often bringing prosperity and sometimes poverty. In 2006 the country was admitted to the the EU Union. Notwithstanding the current problems that the Union has faced some states have benefited. In Bucharest there's been a boom of building and retail shops. Beginning a low base the quality of life is shaping up. Industrial opportunities are there to have.
