Ring in the New Year on a Greece Holiday

By Steve Alexander

If you fancy something a bit different to celebrate the New Year coming round again, why not consider taking a last minute break to warmer climes and exciting celebrations on a Greece holiday. Travelling abroad for New Years Eve might seem a bit unorthodox, but Athens really is a fantastic place to welcome the New Year in.

Rather than on Christmas Day, the traditional time to give gifts in Greece is on New Year's Day. Free concerts and breathtaking firework displays are visible from all over Athens and people clamour to find the best viewing spots. New Year's Eve on holidays in Greece is often spent in the plazas and streets as the adults rush to complete their last minute shopping.

The children spend the night playing pretend war games with plastic "weapons" and whistles, running amok around the city. On any other night it is jammed with traffic, office workers returning home and revellers out for some fun and perhaps a bite to eat.

On New Year's Day, Greeks all over the country spend the day playing games in and around their homes and cafes as traditionally it is a very lucky day in Greece and they want to take advantage of this. At this time of year, you can never be sure what the weather will be like in Athens, so taking a holiday at this time can be a bit of a gamble. Whether it's raining or sunshine though, you can be sure the the temperature will be a lot more pleasant than back home.

You'll be able to experience true Greek hospitality and celebrate the coming of a New Year in a new and exciting way, even if you've never considered leaving the country for New Year before, and a short break in Athens is hard to beat.
