There is something thrilling about riding through the African bush on the back of an elephant. The 12 fully trained African elephants arrived at Kapama Private Game Reserve in early 2002, after being relocated from Zimbabwe, where their safety was in jeopardy. During the elephant-back safari, guests are seated on comfortable canvas-covered saddles positioned behind an experienced elephant handler. From this vantage point, they are able to view game from close proximity as the elephants move silently and in single file through the bush. The unique and memorable experience of interacting with Africa's gentle giants will be savored long after guests alight from the patiently kneeling elephants. Board the elephants while the sun start rising and after your safari, enjoy champagne, fruit juice and tasty fruit.
Midway between the Blyde River Canyon and the Kruger National Park, the people of the traditional villages of Shangana invite and welcome guests to share in the way of life of the Shangaan residents. The charming villages are set in the shade of ancient trees in a reserve of forest and grassland. A lively African market village forms the centre of Shangana, where local craftspeople make and trade their craft. From here, trained guides lead guests down to villages on daytime tours, midday tours with lunch, and the famed Evening Festival in the Chief's Kraal. Shangana has been created and built by local Shangaan people, not only preserving rich heritage but also showing us an example of South Africa's great cultural diversity.
After totally transforming an old building into a shop-bar-caf of significant charm, we have rolled out an array of other attractions. A temperature controlled cellar housing the red and rare wines and winelands products such as Wine Estate brandy, grappa, olive oil, grape seed oil and verjuice are on sale. Tastings are presented daily on Cape Wines, locally brewed beer from Hops Hollow Brewery and South African craft cheeses. And to accompany your delicious lunch platter the Wine Shop offers an assortment of South African wines by the glass.
The Hazyview Skyways Trail, Africa's longest aerial cable trail . You meet your guides at Gecko Lodge where the trail begins and the adventure starts in the hills above the Sabie River. You will need to hike a bit to a stand before connecting up to the cable and zooming your way to the next platform which may be 100 meter away. In total there are 10 platforms and 1.2km of cable - the entire trip could take as long as three hours. After finishing the trip, make your way to Perry's Bridge in the town of Hazyview for an ice cold beer!
