Mossman North Queensland

By Anton Maverick

Mossman is a tired little cane town in far north Queensland, approximately 16 kilometres north of Port Douglas. The road north continues past the turn off to Port Douglas before reaching Mossman. While Port Douglas is explicitly on the coast and is not unusual in glitz and glamour, Mossman is the complete opposite.

Mossman is the last town to load up with supplies before heading even further north into the Daintree World Heritage listed rainforest. Apart from being a common sugar town, Mossman is a service town to it's own community. The sugar mill is the center of the city and services the various cane farms round the town.

Cane trains run right thru the middle of the town, down on to the mill and do not stop. This leads directly to the fascinating situation of lines of vehicles, either going to, or coming from the Daintree, waiting impatiently to be on their way. The remainder of the world could be running on 'quick ' time, but Mossman does not change. The cane trains always have the right of passage, irrespective of how many well heeled tourists are waiting.

Mossman has some spectacular rain-trees on the northern side of the town, and their sufficient foliage actually stretches completely across the road, creating a natural shaft of welcome shade. The neighbors have a market each Saturday morning under those rain-trees and they provide a place to talk with neighbors and friends. Saturday morning shopping is well in Mossman and everything except the supermarket and cafes close at 12 noon.

It is a awfully nice tiny stop over both from and to the Daintree. There are a couple of wonderful little cafes that serve great coffee, cake and an exceedingly sufficient lunch, before heading off again. The cane fields always conjure up pictures of times gone by and it takes a tiny city like Mossman to show that many things never change. Mossman is a must stop during your campervan hire Australia road trip.
