A Short Guide: Outdoor Leisure And Recreation

By Bill McNeil

Nothing can compare to outdoor leisure and recreation. No amount of digital mimicry can quite duplicate the unique and beautiful qualities that our natural world can bestow. Many people forget that while video games and television is entertaining, going outside is among the most satisfying and unbeatable experiences that anyone can possibly have.

For those who've never really been a great nature enthusiast, it's easy to get started. Begin your adventures by simply having a picnic in your local park. It's easy, nearby and lots of fun. Bring a picnic and go with your family. There's nothing like sunshine and blue sky to perk up your spirits. Not only is it physically healthy, it also has an effect on your optimism!

Try visiting a lake nearby your house. Bring along a picnic basket packed with sandwiches and a blanket to sit on. After walking some trails, sit down and eat lunch. Many times there's a place to park your vehicle up the road. There you should find large announcement boards that tell you where to go and what exactly the local rules are on activities you're interested in.

You'll also find that most day passes last until sundown. Also, many day parks include picnic benches for you to eat at and grill hamburgers and hot dogs. Bring along the entire family or lots of friends and have a cookout. Don't forget to clean up after yourself and remove synthetic items like plastic bags or soda cans, which can harm curious wildlife.

Speaking of camping, if you don't spend a lot of time living outside in the first place, begin your camping experience at a more populated area. National parks and campgrounds offer a certain expanse of wilderness that is up for the public's use. Bring a tent, food that's adequately sealed, warm clothes, hiking boots, flashlight, matches and a clear knowledge of what to do if you get lost.

Rock climbing. This is a loved pastime of many nature enthusiasts. You may find that as a beginner, it's best to practice climbing indoor climbing structures before moving on to bigger, real rocks. Have a thorough knowledge of ropes, knots and survival techniques. It's also a sporting activity, so make sure you have lots of upper body strength. It's an amazing, soothing hobby to engage in.

Going outside and enjoying nature is fun and an entirely different experience than watching television or even reading a book. It's a great way to get in touch with your environment and learn about the world around you.
