I've had an aspiration for a long time to take a train from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The idea of being on a train for several days was inspiring. I finally convinced myself and arranged to ride it across the country. The adventure would begin in Indiana and finish in Washington. I had a best friend that lived out there and I was going to crash with her for a while. Well, as my trip finished, a family emergency forced me to start looking for a way to head all the way home. I ordered some plane tickets quickly, with some Expedia coupons that a friend had accumulated.
I thought it was going to cost an arm and a leg to have to fly back so last minute. There is no way that this could be inexpensive. The flight worked out to a little less than what a round trip ticket would have cost me had I just flown out from the beginning. It was surprisingly cheap compared to what I had thought it would cost.
In the end though, the cost of the ticket was immaterial. I had to make it home on the spot and that was the most essential thing. My grandma had suffered an aneurysm and was unconscious at the hospital. No one in the family was sure if it actually was an aneurysm though. This is what the medical specialists had named it though. All they knew was that one moment she was complaining about feeling horrible, and then she passed out. Since that time, she has been unconscious.
I made it back into Indiana later that same day that I had finally touched down in Washington. It was strange to go from spending three days to make the trip out there to just a few hours to come home. I was able to get back to grandma and spend the night with her. I was still alert and pretty wired from the whole ordeal.
I was there in time to see my grandmother pass and hold her hand as she went. I'm very happy I was able to get a plane home so fast. It was a shock that I could purchase an airplane ticket so fast. I always assumed that you had to plan weeks ahead of time to have tickets. I get weird feelings sometimes, like I can feel Grandma's spirit and that she is helping me in life. She will always inhabit me, no matter where I go.
