Coorg is originated from the local account Kodavu and the people of Kodagu and Kodavas. According to the Puranic accounts, the land of initial settlement was known as Krodadesa that later became Kodavu. It is also said that Kodagu originated from the word Kodava, where Kod means 'give' and avva means 'mother' that refers to mother Kaveri, the river. Coorg is positioned in the southwestern part of Karnataka bordering Kerala. Its maximum length is 96 km and breadth 64 km. Its area is about 4102.3 sq. km.
The famous peaks in Coorg are Pushpagiri, Nishani Motte, Kote Betta, Tumbe Male, Tadiyandamol Soma Male and Brahmagiri. Coorg houses various communities with different ethnic origins. Coorgies or Kodavas are considered as the major ethnic community. Gowdas Tamilians, Malayalees, Mophlas or Mapilles communities also share a part here.
