Temperature Has an Effect on Your Butane Torch Lighter

By Wendy Mallikarjunan

There are things that you may not realize about your cigar accessories and how you care for them. If you do not know about these things, you will be more than a little surprised when your accessories do not work properly and you cannot enjoy that cigar you have been looking forward to. For example, when you are taking care of your butane torch lighter, you will always need to keep in mind that it can be quite severely affected by temperature. Many people do not realize this until they run into a problem.

Just how will a torch lighter be affected by the weather? This has mostly to do with the extreme cold of the winter. If you live in a southern area where temperatures hardly drop below freezing, you may never have a problem. However, if you live in an area that experiences bitter cold, then you will need to know this information. Your torch lighter can be affected by this cold, and it will malfunction if it gets too cold.

If you simply are using the lighter while you are in the cold and it has been in your pocket or indoors, you will not have any problem lighting your cigar. However, if you leave that torch lighter in the cold long enough that it gets cold, it will not work. This is because the gas molecules in the butane will retract and get smaller in the cold air. When this happens, the pressure within the lighter will not be enough to make the torch lighter strike.

If you keep your lighter in your pocket, then your body heat will be enough to keep it warm so that it will work, no matter how cold it may be outside. However, if you leave your cigar lighter in your car overnight in subzero temperatures, it will not work until it has time to warm up. This is simply the law of science. The cold will not damage the lighter, but it will temporarily quit working. You can get it to work again simply by giving it time to warm up.

When you realize you have questions about your new cigar hobby, it is a good idea to get them answered so that you do not run into a problem, like a malfunctioning cigar lighter. Will your lighter work well in the extreme cold? If the lighter itself is warm, then it will work just fine. If it is left in the cold, it will not work until it warms up.
