Can You Afford A Holiday In The Caribbean?

By Beth Millington

The US Virgin Islands is home to a very exclusive hotel called Caneel Bay. A special holiday package gets you a premier room, breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as transfers to and from the airport. And all for just $1300 a night. Evidently, such a room isn't intended for everyone - but there are ways of spending a week or two in a Caribbean resort without bankrupting yourself.

A holiday in the Caribbean is never going to be as cheap as a week's stay in Devon, but there's no reason it shouldn't be out of reach if you look around for a good deal and shop smart. It's wise to begin looking at islands that aren't so well known. This means that Barbados and the Bahamas may take a back seat to unheard of islands - although you should always be aware of the possibility of cheap last minute deals becoming available.

The island of spice, Grenada, is just one of these lesser-known islands. It is possible to stay at a hotel on the island for a week with a flight from London for around half the price of a single night's stay at Caneel Bay's most expensive room. Accommodation on the island is concentrated in the southwest, but those willing to stay in even quieter parts of the island could save more money. Although the island attracts fewer tourists than some of the busier Caribbean Islands, this doesn't mean it doesn't offer the same carnival atmosphere throughout the year.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are another group of islands that don't have a price tag to match their reputation. 8 of the 40 islands are inhabited, although many of the others are available to visit on day trips. The cheaper price tag of the island is not reflected in the quality of its beaches, coral reefs and diving environments making it a fantastic choice for any holiday in the Caribbean.

To some people the idea of describing any Caribbean holiday as 'cheap' might be insulting. But a holiday on the Caribbean can certainly be cheaper than many people imagine. While nobody's suggesting that 5* all-inclusive resorts have suddenly become affordable to all, the chance to sample a taste of the Caribbean is available to more than ever before.
