When thinking about the Caribbean many people immediately think of golden beaches and warm seas, so that's where we'll start. As well as the many tourist beaches with full facilities such as Luquillo, 30 miles east of San Juan, you can also find some fairly secluded spots too; explore the area around Guánica to find these, while if you're a surfer you might like to head to the northwest around Rincon.

However, there is far more to the island than just the beaches, and although many travel for these alone others want to explore the rich history. El Morro is situated in Old San Juan, and is one of the most impressive fortresses that you will ever see. This incredible structure helps to show the amazing power that was used to defend the islands. Half a century of Military history surrounds this area, and is a breath taking experience whilst in Puerto Rico.

The art galleries in San Juan are fascinating, and offer visitors an amazing look at the different styles of art available. There are a huge number of art galleries in the old city walls, making it a very unusual exhibition space. The local artists proudly show off their work alongside incredible famous pieces. No matter what style of art you are looking for you are bound to find it in this area of the city, and it is always nice to escape the beaches.

You might also like to head to Ponce, one of the most fascinating towns on the island, which will offer you a real look at how the people live, and work in Puerto Rico. The quaint trails that lead through the town will allow you to explore the oldest fire station on the island. Food and drink is a massive part of the culture in Puerto Rico, and you will love experiencing all of the different foods; the local ice cream is certainly a delicacy not to be missed.
