4 Tips For Planning Your Maui Destination Wedding

By Ella Hemmings

While there are few places on earth that are more ideal for a wedding than Maui, you might be worried about the process of planning a wedding far from home. However, this is your special day and if you wish to enjoy it in Hawaii, the following tips can help you plan this special occasion.

1. Begin With The Budget

While plane tickets and hotel rooms will need to be purchased, a wedding at a destination can be easier to afford than a wedding near your home. When at home, you might invite 100 or more guests, but generally far fewer people can and do attend a destination wedding. It might be just the wedding couple, a few close friends and immediate family. This substantially cuts the cost of a wedding reception which can easily eat up the majority of your wedding budget. Plus, you can enjoy your wedding and honeymoon all in one place. So just sit down and crunch the numbers and set a comfortable budget, chances are it's enough for your Maui wedding.

2. Set Your Wedding Date

Maui has perfect weather around the year, right? Well, that might be true, but keep in mind that your guests (even if you just have a few) will need plenty of time to plan for this trip. People have to schedule time off from work, find places for kids and pets to stay, book plane tickets and reserve accommodations. So be sure to give people several months to plan, if not three to six months. Obviously, once you set the date, you will also want to plan out your own flying and accommodation plans. Typically, the high season in Maui runs from December through March, as well as the summer months. You might be able to save a little if you plan your wedding in April, May, September, October or November.

3. Hire Your Wedding Planner

As soon as you set your set your date and your budget, hire a Maui wedding planner. Unless you lived for several years in Maui, you really don't know where to find the best wedding vendors. It's hard to select florists, find a minister, hire a photographer and handle all of the other details when you are thousands of miles away, and a Maui wedding planner is a lifesaver.

One easy way to plan is to select a convenient Maui wedding package, such as those created by Love Maui Weddings. Packages range in size and you can select a small, affordable elopement package or a grander package that includes a wedding on the beach, at a picturesque resort or perhaps at a historic plantation. There are interesting add-ons to consider, such as having the bride arrive for the ceremony by canoe or perhaps a pre-wedding helicopter ride.

4. Don't Register For Gifts

While we all love filling up our gift registries and hauling in that wedding loot, if you are planning a destination wedding, it's wise to rethink gifts. For one thing, people will be spending a bundle to attend your wedding so it's considerate to think about the budgets of your family and friends. In addition, no one wants to haul a bulky gift on an airplane and you probably don't want to haul a bunch of extra stuff home either. If people do want to give you something, consider gift cards or even giving money to a special charity in your honor.
