Inspect the interior of the car to determine if there are any tears, cracks, stains or burns. While inside check the odometer reading and test all the switches, buttons and the radio to see if everything is working properly.

The final step when purchasing used cars is to take the vehicle for a test drive. While driving the car, you can check if the transmission is smooth and whether or not the engine is sound. A few other things to check while on a test drive are the brakes, lights, windshield wipers and electronics.
