Holidays in Majorca: Things to Avoid

By Graham Shelton

Attracting 6 million tourists to its shores each year is the Balearic Island of Majorca. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca boasts a clich selection of sun, sea and sand. But whilst the island may almost be paradise, there are, however, a few things to avoid when holidaying in Majorca.

You should first and foremost be careful about what you eat and drink on the island. There are no rivers on the island and the island is prone to drought, so water that comes out of taps is often imported and may have been sitting in cisterns for a long time. Stick to only drinking bottled water. You should also be careful with food. Seafood and dairy products should only be eaten if they're fresh and have come straight out of a fridge. The heat of Majorca means that street or cheap food should be eaten with caution.

Majorca has brought into the world many an artist, including Mir, Dal and Picasso. However, the island now provides us with many fakes and forgeries said to be 'originals' by such greats. If you do spot a sketch or painting, ask to see a certificate of authentication and a guarantee before you agree to buy. Peddlers also operate throughout the island. Unless you are really keen on buying something from a stall or market, don't linger or eye up the merchandise. If you are interested, however, start by offering the vendor half the price and take it from there.

The beaches of Majorca are beautiful and great places to spend the day. However, they are also breeding grounds for those looking to rip tourists off, so be warned. Restaurants and bars along the beach front are often overpriced and sell low quality food and drink so try to avoid them. Also watch out for the trileros; gamblers who play the three-cup trick which is made to look easy to win when in fact it's a set up.

Also be aware of the gypsies who offer you rosemary before demanding money and those selling 'too-good-to-be-true' guided tours. But, like all holiday destinations, it's all about using your common sense; just make sure you pack yours!
