Journeying With Your Dog

By Ian Tate

It's common for people taking short trips to bring their pets. When the vacation lasts longer than a few weeks though, pets can become a problem.

It's not always a good idea for you to take your pet with you on your trips. If you really want your pet along though, just plan and prepare well for the trip.

In general, it's more convenient travel by car when you have pets with you. Travelling by care ensures that you can stop as often as you want and as your dog needs. Flying somewhere with a dog requires more effort and a lot of discomfort.

You won't have the chance to check your pet regularly during a plane ride since she won't be in the same area as you are. Your pet may be uncomfortable in the cargo area. Freezing temperature prevents airline companies from allowing any animals on board.

Always keep your pet's trip as smooth as possible. Don't forget to feed you dog while you travel.

You should identify your lodging options.

Do you have a place in mind to stay at during the trip? Contact hotels beforehand to know their rules for pets. A number of hotels require that a pet should not be left unsupervised in a room. Having a dog sitter will come in handy in case you have other engagements. If you are staying at a hotel with your pet, chances are they have contacts for pet sitters.

There's a chance you'll have friends to stay with on the way. Take measures to prevent damage to your friend's possessions. House owners will be happy if their visitors take measures to prevent damage to their belongings.

Help your pet warm up to the new pad by having along some of her doggie paraphernalia. Having some of your dog's own stuff will help him feel more at home in the new pad. If your dog behaves and settles down, you and your friends have one less thing to worry about.

Canine curiosity makes a journey seem fuller. Most people delight in dogs so it's easy to make conversation and start a new friendship. You can enjoy old places with a new viewpoint when you have a pet along.
