Department 56 Is A Great Tradition

By Nick Bullard

If you are looking for a great holiday tradition to start with someone, then I highly suggest collecting Department 56 houses and accessories. These beautifully hand painted miniature, lighted houses can make wonderful accents during the holiday season. There are several different series, and they come in all different colors and styles.

What I like most about Department 56 is that you have some people who will collect a piece here and there, and then you have folks who will fill an entire room of their house to create the most amazing village displays. Some even go so far as to incorporate model trains, cardboard hillsides and plastic wrap painted skating ponds! There is really no limit to what you can do with a little imagination.

Collecting Department 56 can be affordable too, you can always find a retailer who offer free shipping, and many of them discount their retired stock as much as 40%! Recently, I found a site called Department 56 Corner that even has a rewards program that allows you to save money on every single purchase you make! The program is free to join, and they give you 100 points just for doing so ($10 equivalent).

Once you have created your rough drawings you can begin to develop your villages. Keep in mind that your drawings are just rough, so you can always adapt as new ideas come to you as you are setting up your display. In fact, I always like to see how different my final displays are from my sketches after everything is complete.

While most people are putting away their holiday decorations and not wanting to think about them again for a while, you will need to train yourself to look for the deals. It is not uncommon to find Department 56 houses marked down by 40% at that time! You can also find some great coupons and reward programs that can really bring the cost down even more!
